SECOND GENERATION
2. CLAUDE B. ANDERS was
born on 9 Jun 1889 in SPRINGFIELD, LANE, OREGON. He died on 4 Oct 1965 in SACRAMENTO,
SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA. CLAUDE B. ANDERS (Curly) was born on June 9, 1889, in
Springfield, Oregon. His parents were ELBERT and POLLY (CALLAWAY) ANDERS (See
Family Group Record A1-4), who had moved from Independence, Grayson County, Virginia
about 5 years earlier.
His father died in 1902, in a Sawmill accident and it was necessary for him to
quit school and go to work to help support the family. In the 1907 Lane County
Directory, he was shown as head of the family.
Before 1909 he left home and went to work for the Northern Pacific Railroad Company
and probably med IDA in Portland, Oregon.
NOTE: IDA had always indicated that they were married in Portland in 1909. Entries
from the Portland and Spokane City Directories add confusion to this. I have
been unable to find a record of their marriage in Portland, Western Oregon &
Washington Counties, Spokane or Coeur d'alene, Idaho. I realize that IDA S.
NELSON referenced in the directories could be a different person, but I do believe
this is our IDA. It should be noted that information in the Directories are
usually 1 year off.

In 1952, IDA & CLAUDE moved to California, first living in Sacramento, California
and then in the Sonoma & Napa Valley area. IDA died in Calistoga, California
on July 9, 1956, from a stroke. This was completely unexpected since she had
been sick very little.
After IDA died, CLAUDE lived in 2 or 3 places in Napa County, California, before
he moved to Sacramento, where he passed away on October 4, 1965.
He was married to IDA SOPHIA NELSON 3 about 1914 in SPOKANE, SPOKANE,
WASHINGTON. 3. IDA SOPHIA NELSON
3 was born on 30 Mar 1890 in PORTLAND, NORTH DAKOTA. She died
on 9 Jul 1956 in CALISTOGA, CALIFORNIA. IDA SOPHIA NELSON was born in Portland,
North Dakota, on March 30, 1890. She was Baptized as EIDA SOFIA BERG (Her father
later changed the family name to NELSON) on April 24, 1890. Her parents, NELS
and ANDRINE (ANDERSEN) NELSON (See Family Group Record N1-6), had emigrated
from Norway, about 8 years before. She was the 5th born of 8 children. Soon
after her birth, the family moved to South Bend, Washington. Children were:
i. ELBERT
NELSON ANDERS was born on 16 Jun 1915 in SPOKANE, SPOKANE, WASHINGTON. He
died on 3 Jul 1961 in SPOKANE, SPOKANE, WASHINGTON. ELBERT NELSON ANDERS was
born on Tuesday, June 16, 1915, in Spokane, Washington. His parents were CLAUDE
B. & IDA SOPHIA (NELSON) ANDERS,
At the age of 5, ELBERT started taking Piano lessons. Originally, he concentrated
on Classical music, but at about the age of 11 this changed, and his new instructor
was LES TAYLOR, who was the best known Pianist in Spokane. After a couple of
years, TAYLOR told his parents it was a waste of money to pay for his lessons,
since he was a better pianist than any of the teachers in Spokane.
Music was practically his whole life as a child. He did not care for sports
and school was only a necessary evil. He never graduated from High School, leaving
when he was 18 years old and a Senior at Lewis & Clark High. He did enjoy
Hunting & Fishing, as long as they didn't interfere with his Music.
When he was 15 he had his own small band (5 or 6 pieces). He not only played
the Piano, but wrote all of the arrangements. He was able to listen to a new
song on the radio and write down the notes. He would then write arrangements
for his band.
Prior to the time he was 18, he had an audition with the US Army Band, for which
he was accepted, if he would enlist in the Army. His parents refused to authorize
his enlistment.
He was a natural musician, and was able to pick up almost any instrument and
in a short time would be able to play the instrument. As a Sophomore in High
School, he tried out for the school band. He found out they needed a Saxophene
player, so he borrowed an instrument, and then auditioned, and was selected for
the band.
ELBERT worked for his father in the Service Station until he left High School
and he then took over management of the station.
RITA MARIE ANKERSON, the daughter of FRANK & LEATITIA (LORD) ANKERSON, was
born in Spokane, Washington on Tuesday, December 31, 1912.
RITA and ELBERT were married in Newport, Washington, in 1935.
